BSI is a system built to accommodate a broad range of users with a variety of unique and distinct specimen tracking needs. Accordingly, BSI’s Customization module epitomizes the versatility we aim to provide to our customers by equipping them with the tools to tailor any set of fields to their specific workflow.

Customization is a set of interfaces composed of field definition editors corresponding to various data tables in the system. These interfaces include Requisition Fields, Consent Fields, Specimen Fields, Study Fields, Shipment Fields, Batch Fields, and more. In each field definition editor, users can add as many custom fields as they’d like. Each is defined by a set of properties that specify its type, label, whether or not it will be required, and the order it will be displayed among other custom fields. Custom fields can also be set as active or inactive, allowing the user to retire a field temporarily without deleting it altogether.

Among the field types users can choose from are dates, integers, decimals, time, choice, multi-choice and characters. Setting field types will dictate the kinds of characters allowed in the custom field, and for certain field types, such as date type, the system will provide the user with prompts for inputting data in the correct format. Users can set minimum and maximum values for numeric inputs, can specify how many characters are allowed in a field, and can specify which special characters are valid inputs. For field types like choice or multi choice, BSI provides the user with an interface that allows them to create a list of possible choices for selection when data is entered.

BSI takes field customization a step further with the application of Verifiers. For any custom field that is created, users can apply a verifier which will generate a warning or error when specific criteria for field input are met. For example, users can elect to apply a verifier to a custom field that generates an error when the values entered into that field are less than a certain numeric value. Verifiers can also be applied to custom fields when the associated specimen has undesirable values in other fields. A custom message can be sent along with a verifier error or warning, and users can set verifiers to be triggered in specific modules throughout the system.

It is critical to users that a specimen tracking system does everything necessary to capture fields relevant to their workflow. BSI not only achieves this, but does so in an intuitive, user friendly way that allows users to specify every possible aspect of a field value.
