Vial Status

The current status of a specimen is stored in the BSI database in the Vial Status field.  The Vial Status can also be changed by users through the Data Entry and Requisitions managers.

BSI will automatically create a batch to change a specimen's status, when necessary, behind the scenes.  For example, when a specimen is successfully reserved for a requisition, the Vial Status will change from In to Reserved.  Only specimen with an In status can be reserved in Requisitions.

Vial Status values:

  • In - The specimen is in the repository and is available for requisitions. On databases with Location Management, only a specimen with location data can be marked as In.
  • Out - The specimen has been shipped out of the repository. On databases with Location Management, this Vial Status will clear the specimen's current location data.
  • Reserved - The specimen has been reserved in a requisition for processing. On databases with Location Management, specimens marked as Reserved may have location data, but a location is not required. The current location data will not be cleared when a specimen is marked as Reserved.
  • Lost/Missing - The specimen is lost or missing. On databases with Location Management, this Vial Status will clear the specimen's current location data.
  • Destroyed/Broken - The specimen has been destroyed or was accidentally broken. On databases with Location Management, this Vial Status will clear the specimen's current location data.
  • Empty - The specimen is empty. On databases with Location Management, this Vial Status will clear the specimen's current location data.
  • On Hold - The specimen has been reserved for some special use. On databases with Location Management, only a specimen with location data can be marked as On Hold.
  • Discrepant - The specimen is discrepant.  This is usually applied to a specimen that has one or more unresolved discrepancies in the shipment batch where it was received. On databases with Location Management, only a specimen with location data can be marked as Discrepant.
  • Pre BSI2 - Specimen BSI re-label (Pre-BSI2 specimen). On databases with Location Management, specimens with this status do not require location data.
  • Array Core - The specimen record is one element of a Microarray. On databases with Location Management, specimens with this status do not require location data.
  • Blinded - The origin of the specimen is masked.  The original BSI ID and specimen lineage is no longer visible and a new BSI record is created.  The repository the specimens are being transferred to will not be able to track the lineage of the specimen.
